Mohandas Gandhi preached his "doctrine of nonviolent resistance to British rule in every village" he passed. "Civil disobedience is the inherent right of a citizen." Explain why you agree or disagree with Gandhi's statement. Structure your ideas in a logical fashion and defend your position with relevant evidence and logical reasoning!

No person can be forced to follow the laws but generally, people abide by it to avoid unnecessary trouble. I disagree with Gandhi's statement. It didn't help at the time either. In 1919, the protests led to violence and a strong British reaction. British troops killed hundreds of unarmed protesters in the city of Amritsar. Gandhi was arrested for his role in protests against British rule and spent several years in prison.
ReplyDeleteno one if forced to do anything they dont want to do, if you break they law then you have consequences but people still dont what they want to do. I dont believe with his statement because if everyone where to not follow the laws then bad things can happen. you need to have atleast some laws for the citizens to follow, the citizens should have right of free speech so they can voice their opinion but they shouldnt have no laws.

Everyone always says over and over again "it is a free country." yes, it is a free country and we have our civil rights, but there needs to be some structure in the society in order for it to be successful and not lead to chaos. Obviously, people today dont always follow the laws for whatever reason, but there are punishments for that. if one decides they must disobey a law we have, they have all the rights to do so, with getting in trouble as a reward. Our government allows us to vote on laws to be passed or not, so if a law is passed, that means we as a people are ok with following it. Disobeying it would just be going against yourself basically.
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree. Not that many people will refuse to obey the laws unless they want to get in trouble. For example, when Gandhi was protesting, the British troops killed many of the protesters. With free speech and protesting in our country, you wont be killed, and if you truly believe that it is unjust to you and society, refuse.
ReplyDeleteI believe that civil disobediance is both a good and bad thing; it is good because it doesnt harm anyone physically and it gets people to listen for the better but it is also bad because if you break the law you go to jail and suffer many consequences.
ReplyDeleteI agree with his ideas. If people want to resist the laws and they have all the right too but, if that said person does not obey the laws then they should face the punishments. While at the same time, if they did not obey the laws and it is not to anyones harm then they should not be punished.
ReplyDeleteCivil disobediance is good because no one gets hurt in these protests and people get their points across. But sometimes these protests get out of hand and people start to get in trouble with the law. It is someones own choice to break the law or not break the law. If they break the law they are only hurting themself because they were dumb enough to break the law when they should know the difference between right and wrong.
ReplyDeleteI believe that having civil disobedience is a good thing because no one gets hurt that badly or if at all. We all have certain rights but we still need to follow the laws that are set out by the government, state and constitution. when someone breaks the law, it is their own fault and nobody else's. whoever commits the wrong, deserves and will get a punishment, whether it is a harsh one or a not so harsh one. Also when someone breaks the law they should know what they are getting themselves into and realize the difference between their own opinions and the truth. When someone breaks the law it is also usually for a selfish reason or sometimes to get back at someone else. With violence and crime everything becomes wore....no problems solved.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Gandhi's idea of civil disobedience being an essential right of every citizen, to a certain extent. As long as the "civil disobedience" does not grow violent, I believe that it is a good way to express one's opinion and try to advocate change. However, once laws are broken, the protest becomes ineffective. For example, at the Kent-State Massacre, students were protesting the American invasion of Cambodia. When the protest grew violent, the National Guard interfered, killing 4 students and hurting nine. To me, this proves that there needs to be cooperation between protesters and security. Therefore, cooperation, rationality, and maturity are essential to an effective protest.

ReplyDeleteWithout any hesitation, I agree with Gandhi's statement. Civil disobedience involves the nonviolent resistance to laws while at the same time, willing to embrace the consequences. I believe that civil disobedience is one of the best ways to protest/rebel against a government, as it obviously does not encompass any violence at all. I'm sure this is why Gandhi preached this doctrine. He did not want anyone hurt in the process. His other statement is, in my opinion, a fact. If a citizen finds a specific law unfair or unjust, they should not have to obey it. Laws serve the sole purpose of enforcing order and safety on citizens, and if a specific law does not do this, it should not have to be obeyed. Every law should be fair, and by no means, unfair. If a law happens to be unfair, civil disobedience should be executed. It is also the best way to bring about change. If enough people are gathered, the government could ultimately have no choice but to do away with the law or achieve some type of compromise with the protesters.

ReplyDeletei agree with Ghandi's ideas about civil disobedience. I don't think anyone should be forced to do anything they don't want to, although i do think that some actions require consequences. In my opinion, i believe that citizens need to express what they think but i think that sometimes what people say may have a lasting effect and that then that person would have to, as a result, suffer the consequences.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ghandi's statement about civili disobedience. People need to be held responsible for their wrong doings. It is the choice of the individual to commit a crime or not. I think that they should be held responsible for this but also counseled on how to correct their mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI don't think people can be made to do anything if they don't want to, such as following laws. However, if a person chooses to break a law there are usually consequences. These consequences are put in place to urge people to do the right thing, because following laws and doing the right and responsible thing is good for a society. While people in America can pretty much do anything they want, civil disobedience isn't always the best thing, because it can get you into trouble, and usually people don't like to be in trouble.
ReplyDeleteNobody is forced to do anything which everyone should know that. But if you disobey or do something bad your going to have some kind of consequences. I agree and disagree because I believe that you have to serve the consequences.. And then everyone should have to follow the laws that are given. So then people should be held responsible for whatever they do or cause.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Gandhi's statement. I believe that if people believe that the government is being unjust they should stand up and fight for what they believe in. The way Gandhi instructs people to fight for what they believe in (nonviolently and through protest) is the correct way to do it. I also believe that citizen's have the right to speak up because ultimately the people should be able to choose how they want their country to be ruled.
ReplyDeletei agree and disagree, you shouldnt be forced to do something you dont want to do, but you should also have to deal with consequences. but if you do believe in something strongly enough you should stand up for what you believe in and give your opinoin and let others know how you feel. i think that people should express what they think or feel but i think they need to be careful on how the express it because then things can get out of hand.
ReplyDeletei believe gandhi is right in this statement. Every citizen should have the right to civil disobedience because you can break the rules if you want to but that doesnt mean you won't get punished. It is the responsibility of the person exercising his right to civil disobedience to be willing to deal with the consequences afterwards

ReplyDeleteGandhi knew that civil disobedience was the only way to defeat in-justice , not to provoke it. I agree, just like in chapters 8 and 9 when you fight it only leads to more and more fighting, Until their is no one left.Civil disobedience is dangerous and even though Gandhi was fighting a evil empire that held no respect for fellow man, at times when he brooke the law it was still illegal and he had to face the consequences ,he knew that and believed very much in laws and order i think civil disobedience is the highest level of protest one can do
ReplyDeleteI do agree with this statement. By using violent and radical ways there could be no victory. This would lead only to more problems and tension which would make matters worse. by leading with a non-violent and peaceful movement, the people prevailed. The purpose was to lead by example, and to prove the strength in people by using peace and endurance. Gandhi not only proved to be a very strong human being, but a wise leader, for he knew that only a peaceful cause could lead to victory
ReplyDeleteI agree with Gandhi's statement, violence isn't stopped by more violence. However you are in charge of what you say and do, this doesn't go with out consiquences and an individual who wishes to be disobedent must be prepared to face them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Gandhi. I believe that one country forcing unjust laws onto another country is immoral. They must go with the laws that the country has already been living by. Civil disobedience should always go punished, if it goes against the law of that country. I do not believe another country should invade another country and force other laws to them.
ReplyDeleteNot many people will refuse to obey the laws unless they want to get in trouble. but then again you shouldnt be forced to do something you dont want to do, but you have to deal with consequences. The purpose was to lead by example, and to prove the strength of the people by using peace and endurance. Gandhi proved to be a very strong human being, and a wise leader; he knew that only a peaceful cause could lead to a victory
